The fall palette at a glance.
When the weather cools, most people move away from neons and pastels toward colors with more depth. Fall shades usually sit in five families: browns and caramels, reds that deepen into burgundy and wine, deep greens, blues and purples such as navy and plum, and soft neutrals like milky nude and sheer pink. None of them is a rule. They are a starting point, and the best shade is the one you will enjoy looking at for the next few weeks. A useful test is your skin's undertone: warm undertones tend to glow with caramel, copper and olive, cool undertones with wine, plum and navy, and deep reds suit almost everyone.
Browns, caramels and amber.
Brown is the color most people think of first for fall, and it comes in many strengths. Caramel and amber feel warm and light, cinnamon and chestnut add a hint of red, and chocolate and espresso are almost as deep as black but softer on the hand. Browns look polished on short nails and elegant on long almond shapes. Burgundy, wine and deep red.
A red manicure never really goes out of season, but in fall it tends to darken. Burgundy, wine, oxblood and cranberry are classic choices from October through the holidays, and they work just as well on toes as on fingers. If a full deep red feels heavy, try an ombré that fades from burgundy into a lighter shade, or keep the color on one accent nail. Deep greens, navy and plum.
Olive and khaki greens are earthy and easy to wear, while forest green and emerald look rich, especially under a glossy top coat. Navy is the quiet alternative to black, and plum and aubergine bring a little drama without going dark all the way. These shades also make striking French tips: a thin navy tip on a sheer base looks modern and grows out gracefully. Finishes and details.
The finish changes how a color reads. A high-gloss top coat makes deep shades look richer. Chrome adds a metallic sheen over a base color, and gold or copper accents pair naturally with browns and greens. Tortoiseshell is a seasonal classic, whether on every nail or only on the tips, and plaid or small flower designs bring a cozy, autumn feel. Wearing a dark color well.
Dark polish shows chips and regrowth more than pale polish, so a little care keeps a fall color looking fresh. Keep your nails at a length you are comfortable with, choose a shape that suits your hands, and plan a refresh before the color grows out. On our menu you can add gel or Dazzle Dry polish to any manicure, and the Nails menu also lists builder gel, Gel-X, dip powder and acrylic.
